Intrinsic motivation
comes from personal interest or enjoyment
in the task itself and exists within
the individual.

Extrinsic motivation
refers to performance of an activity to

earn a reward or
avoid punishment.

Commonly this means a bonus for
meeting goals or punishment for
failure. Extrinsic rewards work well
when employees perform simple
routine physical tasks.

Intrinsic motivation can result in
increased creativity, loyalty
and productivity.
