Basic Premise: People motivate themselves to realize Maslow's higher level needs. Hygiene factors like, pay, benefits, physical environment and leadership style keep employees on-the- job but are not motivational.

Motivational Plan: Reward employees by assigning increased responsibility and recognition.

Herzberg was the first to recognize the fact that Scientific Management designed rewards can actually demotivate.
