August 2019 Stories

Spirit of the Rock

Prior to my tenure, there was an award given most years to a parishioner who was judged to have really served the parish in the year previous, entitled Spirit of the Rock. During the interim period, the vestry chose to recognize a wider group of parishioners for sustaining St Peter’s in important ways.

I have never been able to single out one person for singular recognition in God’s service in a parish. I do try to recognize and validate many different people in ways they serve the kingdom of God as part of the parish family.

Mission &Vision

One of the Vestry Goals for 2019 is to listen, discern, and express our mission and vision for St. Peter’s. By the annual meeting in January 2020, we aim to reshape our community statements for serving, support a culture of servant leadership, and articulate our outreach to our fellow parishioners and the world around us.

We are currently recruiting members to serve on this committee that will likely meet one or two times per month.

Please join us in listening to the Holy Spirit and articulating the mission of St. Peter’s.

Over Memorial weekend, myself along with my husband and 17 year old and 6 year old sons connected with a single mother of 4 children in Tolleson through Care Portal. The mother had to leave everything behind when escaping a drug infested home and domestic violence. She was living in a home with absolutely nothing. No furniture, no beds, no pots and pans, hardly any clothes for her self and the children. The first day there, we were able to deliver and set up a bunk bed with mattresses and a twin bed with all bedding. The mom couldn't believe that someone would help her, even when her own family had not.

Montessori School

Montessori education is unconventional in many ways, but one of the most surprising aspects for people learning about our Elementary program is we do not give homework. (We don’t give grades either, but that’s for another day).

Grounds Crew

All of us enjoy our beautifully cared for water conservative St. Peter’s campus. St. Peter’s doesn’t have a paid Sexton: Volunteers keep it this way.

Mens Group

Emmanuel Ike is a regular at Men’s Group when not in Africa. To and fro several times a year with support from the Thrift Shop, Men’s Group and individuals he supports African Anglican Churches and orphanages. Churches with dirt floors and some lack a roof. Churches in villages where Boko Haram murders men, kidnaps women and children to sell as slaves and worse. Orphanages full of otherwise homeless children.
