Discipline
Discipline comes from the word "Disciple" which means, "to follow."
Discipline is the process a manager uses to lead employees towards
obedience to organization standards and rules.

Disciplinary issues vary in their severity.

  • Problems: Attendance, attitude, carelessness, poor performance.
  • Misconduct: Falsifying an application, harassment, possession
of weapons, sabotage, theft or willful damage.
  • Workplace violence: The typical violator is a single middle-aged
male who blames others for his failures.
    Report Problems

Disciplinary action is usually progressive.

  1. Verbal warning.
  2. Written warning.
  3. Suspension without pay.
  4. Termination

Best results occur when discipline...

  • Is in accord with known rules.
  • Follows a clear warning.
  • Quickly follows an offense.
  • Is consistently applied to everyone.
  • Is impersonal and emotion free.
  • Is backed by an appeals procedure.

The goal is cheerful adherence to properly developed and published performance
standards.
